The Interior of Hoverhome

Home leaf History leaf Family leaf Interior leaf Gardensleaf Tours & EventsleafWeddings

The interior of Hoverhome reflects the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement so popular at the time of its construction. All major rooms on the first floor open to the outside, making the house literally flow into the surrounding gardens and grounds.

From the spacious foyer, an impressive oak staircase curves upward and is highlighted by a ribbon of stained glass windows specifically designed to reflect the yellow rose border which defined the eastern edge of the Hover farm. A narrow, brick-floored conservatory opens to the east of the foyer, flooding the home’s entry with light.

The Large Living Room, dining room and foyer have beamed ceilings and wainscoting, consisting of wood framed panels filled with burlap. Ceilings and wall fixtures, including the tiffany-style fixture above the dining table, are all original.

The Dining Room, which has French doors opening to both the front porch and rear patio, features a massive, built-in oak buffet. Adjacent to the dining room is a butlers pantry, with sink and floor to ceiling drawers and cabinets, which leads into the large kitchen. A Monarch coal stove and a large Hoosier cabinet (pantryette) remain in the kitchen.

The South Wing includes a hall leading to two bedrooms and Charles Hover’s private office. The large master bedroom features a tiled fireplace and stenciled walls. Currently, during weddings at Hoverhome, the master bedroom is frequently used as the “Groom’s Quarters.” A smaller guest room has a “disappearing closet bed” (Murphy Bed) and was often called the sewing room, since it was where the seamstress would stay on her annual visits to create fashions for Katherine and Beatrice.

The Second Floor has three bedrooms, including Beatrice’s spacious room which features a “talking tube” connected to her parents’ first floor quarters. Currently, during weddings at Hoverhome, this spacious room is used as the “Bride’s Quarters.”

The North Wing of the second floor includes a large game room where a massive billiard table once stood. The maid’s quarters were located to the rear of the game room. Currently, this area of the home is used as private living quarters and is not a part of tours or space used during events. There are two additional rooms on the second floor that are used during special events and tours.
